Former Ambassador of India to the WTO and Former Chairman of the WTO's Appellate Body

Amb. Ujal Singh Bhatia is the Former Ambassador of India to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Geneva, from 2004 to 2010. During this period, he was involved in various negotiations under the Doha Round, and represented India in several WTO disputes before the Appellate Body. Later, he was appointed as Member of the Appellate Body of the WTO in November 2011, where he continued to serve until the end of his term in March 2020. During this period, he served as Chairman of the Appellate Body for two years (2017 and 2018). In the course of his term, Amb. Bhatia adjudicated 25 disputes between WTO Members, including 9 as Presiding Member. Prior to his appointment to the Appellate Body, Amb. Bhatia served on the WTO Panel in China-Measures Affecting Imports of Automobile Parts (DS339, DS340, DS342). Amb. Bhatia was also Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and held various positions in the public and private sectors of the Indian state of Orissa.
