Dr. Christian Schultheiss

Senior Research Fellow, Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, Germany

Dr. Christian Schultheiss is a Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, Germany. His current research focuses on maritime dispute settlement in the Indo-Pacific, the EU's external relations in the maritime domain and the role of satellite and AI technologies for ocean governance and maritime security. He was trained in international relations and international law and holds a PhD and a Master's Degree from the University of Cambridge and an MA in Philosophy and Political Science from the University of Tübingen. Through various visiting fellow and research positions at the University of the Philippines, the National Institute of South China Sea Studies in China, Keio University in Japan, and the IISS-Asia in Singapore, he has acquired in-depth knowledge of this region. He has also been a postdoctoral visiting fellow at the Centre for Geopolitics at Cambridge. As a Senior Expert for the European External Action Service, he led the consultations on guidelines for coast guards at the ASEAN Regional Forum during the EU's co-chairmanship and established the first two EU-China Experts' Meetings on Maritime Security.
