  • China Opposes Japan–Philippines Maritime Boundary Negotiations: China has voiced opposition to Japan and the Philippines’ decision to begin formal negotiations on the delimitation of their exclusive economic zones (EEZs) and continental shelves, calling the proposed talks involved waters east of Taiwan, where Beijing claims maritime rights and interests. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said China has lodged formal representations with both countries, expressing strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the move. According to Mao, China believes it holds rights to the relevant waters under its domestic laws and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Beijing argued that the decision by Japan and the Philippines to launch the negotiations unilaterally infringes upon China's maritime rights and violates international law, including UNCLOS, as well as established norms of international relations. Mao stated that China considers the proposed maritime boundary negotiations between the two countries to be “illegal and invalid,” adding that the talks will not affect China’s maritime claims or its exercise of rights in waters east of Taiwan. China also called on Japan and the Philippines to immediately stop actions that it believes undermine its maritime interests and urged both countries to take practical steps to help maintain regional peace and stability.

Weibo Users Debate Over Rising Parking Fee Recovery Measures Across Chinese Cities: A post with the hashtag #ManyCitiesAcrossChinaRecoverParkingFeeWaivers# is going viral on Weibo after reports highlighted that multiple Chinese cities are stepping up efforts to recover unpaid on-street parking fees. The issue comes amid broader concerns over how parking fee collection rights have been outsourced in some cities, turning fee recovery into a major revenue source for operators while exposing persistent gaps in enforcement and payment compliance. Many users argued that the current pricing and enforcement model appears inconsistent, with one user stating that “parking used to be free on many streets, but now everything is charged without clear logic,” while another user questioned why “pricing standards seem to vary widely between cities and even districts.” Some users suggested that “the problem is not charging itself, but arbitrary or excessive pricing.” Several other users supported regulated charging, arguing that “without fees, roads would be fully occupied and parking turnover would collapse,” while another user noted that “long-term abandoned cars make enforcement necessary.” Some users also pointed out practical issues, stating that “demand has increased with rising car ownership, but parking space supply has not kept pace.” However, a few users criticized enforcement practices, with one remarking that “charging is fine, but recovery methods feel too strict,” while another user commented that “fees should not become a burden heavier than the service itself.”

Xinhua Discusses India’s Heatwave and Deepening Water Crisis: An article in Xinhua discussed the severe heatwave and worsening water crisis across parts of India, arguing that the twin challenges have exposed deep structural weaknesses in the country’s urban infrastructure and water management systems. The article noted that temperatures in several regions have exceeded 48 degrees Celsius, while New Delhi and surrounding areas are facing acute water shortages due to critically low water levels in the Yamuna River, the capital’s primary water source. It highlighted reports that the water level at the Vazirabad Dam has fallen well below normal, forcing two major water treatment plants to operate below capacity and significantly reducing water supply to residential neighborhoods and hospitals. The article pointed out that emergency water support from the neighboring state of Haryana has provided only limited relief because of constraints in water transportation and distribution networks. It noted that some areas of Delhi have experienced water shortages for nearly a month, reflecting what it described as a failure of long-term planning and resource management. The article further emphasized warnings from the Indian Meteorological Department that extreme heat conditions are expected to persist in central and northwestern India. It concluded that recurring heatwaves, rapid urbanization, population growth, and inadequate investment in water infrastructure are combining to make water security an increasingly urgent challenge for India.
